Introduction to the project

The NEMOS project concerns seven SICps, whose total surface area amounts to 193 hectares in the three main valleys running through the southern Alpine area within the territory of the Province of Trento.

The prevailing environment in all the sites is made up of the typical habitat of wetland areas, also a priority according to Directive 92/43/CEE. In particular the valuable alluvial forest, herbaceous river vegetation and underwater vegetation which characterise Alpine rivers and the surrounding area are represented.

The interest represented by these sites, as well as botanical and in terms of landscape, also concerns the fauna, forming a specific habitat for rare species linked mainly to wetland areas. Furthermore the seven sites also represent important “stopping off points” for migrating birds which fly over the great valleys while crossing the Alps.

The importance of the sites concerned in the present project is pointed out by the fact that four of them have already received LIFE funding (NIBBIO and NECTON projects) in the last decade. The NEMOS project therefore represents the logical continuation and completion of actions already undertaken with positive results.

Furthermore, to support the management phase of the Natura 2000 network sites and within the context of the Project, the drawing up of a manual is foreseen, in which the experience gained over ten years by the Province of Trento in the management of Alpine wetland areas will be summed up.
